Get Your Student Ready to Play with a Sports Physical

As high schoolers across our community gear up for fall tryouts and practices, there’s one important thing to check off your list: a sports physical.
If your teen plans to play school sports this year, the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) requires them to have a current sports physical on file. This helps ensure it’s safe for them to participate in physical activity and compete throughout the season.
Good to Know: There’s a required OSAA form that must be completed — part by a parent or guardian before the appointment, and the rest by the provider during the physical.

What is a Sports Physical?
A sports physical (also called a pre-participation physical) is a focused check-up that evaluates your teen's readiness to join athletic activities safely. We look at things like:
- Height and weight
- Blood pressure and heart health
- Muscle and joint strength
- Vision and hearing
- Past injuries, illnesses, or surgeries
We’ll also ask questions about your teenager’s medical history, including any family history of heart problems or other health conditions. This helps us catch potential issues early, before they become a problem on the field or court.

Why Are Sports Physicals Important?
Even if your student seems healthy and active, a sports physical can uncover health concerns you might not know about, like asthma, heart murmurs, or joint pain. It also gives you and your teen a chance to ask questions about staying safe and healthy while playing sports.
We might also talk about:
- Injury prevention tips
- Nutrition and hydration
- Managing stress or anxiety related to school or sports
When and Where to Get One
Summer is a great time to schedule a sports physical so your student is ready to go when the school year starts. At NHC, we can often combine a sports physical with your teen’s regular wellness visit, saving you a trip and making sure all their health needs are covered.
