Protect Community Health Centers and Access to Care
Big changes are happening in Washington, D.C., and they could directly impact the healthcare services available to thousands of Oregonians. Right now, funding for Community Health Centers (CHCs) is at risk—and we need your help to ensure our communities continue to get the care they deserve.
What’s Happening?
Every year, Congress decides how much money to set aside for essential services, including federally funded Community Health Centers like NHC.
- On March 14, a temporary funding extension (covering 30% of CHC funding) will expire.
- On March 31, the remaining 70% of CHC funding and key telehealth services are also set to expire.
If lawmakers don’t act fast, health centers across the country could lose funding, making it harder for patients to access affordable medical, dental, and behavioral health services.
Why Does This Matter to You?
CHCs like NHC provide high-quality, affordable care to millions of Americans—including over 480,000 Oregonians. In fact:
- 1 in 4 people on the Oregon Health Plan gets care from a CHC.
- Many CHC patients have chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure and rely on our services to stay healthy.
- CHCs save money for the healthcare system by preventing unnecessary ER visits and hospital stays.
If funding expires, our ability to serve patients could be at risk. This means:
- Fewer providers and longer wait times.
- Less access to essential programs, like behavioral health care and chronic disease management.
- Fewer affordable medication options if funding for the 340B program is cut.

What You Can Do to Help
Your voice can make a difference! Lawmakers need to hear from real people about why CHC funding is important. Here’s how you can help:
Call or email your members of Congress and urge them to pass long-term, stable funding for Community Health Centers. Ask them to:
- Extend CHC funding at the highest possible level.
- Invest in the primary care workforce to address provider shortages.
- Expand telehealth to improve access to care, especially in rural areas.
Customize your message! Share your story if you or someone you know relies on a CHC for care. Real experiences make the biggest impact.
Spread the word! Ask at least five friends, family members, or colleagues to contact their representatives. The more people speak up, the stronger our message becomes.
Meet with your local elected officials. Face-to-face conversations help decision-makers understand how these policies affect real people in their communities.
Together, We Can Protect Access to Care
