Care Beyond the Clinic: NHC Hosts Two Community Health Fairs
Access to healthcare is about more than what happens inside a clinic. Sometimes, it means meeting a neighbor where they are, answering a question, or connecting someone to a resource that can make a difference in their health and well-being.
This year, Neighborhood Health Center (NHC) brought that approach into the community with two Health Fairs in Tanasbourne and Canby, connecting hundreds of community members with free health resources, screenings, education, and local services.
At NHC’s 11th Annual Tanasbourne Health Fair, more than 35 community partners joined us to connect neighbors with free health-related resources ranging from SNAP enrollment assistance to CPR education, and emergency preparedness. NHC’s clinical teams provided 55 dental screenings, 93 vision screenings, and more than 100 blood pressure checks, while our membership outreach team helped connect community members with dental care and OHP-related resources.
For some families, the day provided an opportunity to address an immediate health or safety need. OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital’s car seat safety team inspected 28 car seats and distributed seven car seats to families in need. More than half of the car seats that arrived already installed were being used incorrectly, highlighting how a simple safety check can make life-saving support for a child.
We also brought the Health Fair to Canby for the first time, with nearly 30 community organizations participating. Approximately 200 community members attended the event which provided another opportunity for neighbors to access health information and resources close to home.
These events reflect what community healthcare can look like at its best: removing barriers, building connections, and making it easier for people to get the support they need.
