Celebrating Six Years as a Top Workplace

At Neighborhood Health Center (NHC), our greatest strength has always been our people. This year marks six years in a row that NHC has been recognized as a Top Workplace by The Oregonian, an honor that reflects the compassion, dedication, and teamwork of every staff member who makes care possible.

Why This Recognition Matters

Unlike many awards, the Top Workplace recognition is based entirely on staff feedback through a confidential third-party survey. This year, NHC achieved our highest engagement score in six years, a clear sign of how strongly our teams believe in and support our mission.

The survey asks questions that get to the heart of workplace culture:

  • Do staff feel valued and appreciated?
  • Do they believe in NHC’s mission and values?
  • Would they recommend NHC as a great place to work?

The honest input allows us to celebrate what’s working and find new ways to strengthen our teams. This recognition is proof of the culture we’ve built together — one grounded in support, trust, and patient-centered care.

"When I was looking for my next career opportunity, it was very important to me to align myself with an organization that prioritized accessibility and equity in healthcare and was committed to serving not only the needs of the patient population but the employees as well," said Maria B., clinic manager of NHC Milwaukie Medical Center. "NHC consistently lives up to both of these values, and the individual dedication to the organizational mission that I witness from staff every day is what keeps bringing me back. NHC is full of exceptional, empathetic, and talented people, and I feel lucky to be among them."

The Daily Reality of Community Health

We know this honor comes in the midst of real challenges. Every day, NHC staff:

  • Care for patients managing complex medical, dental, and behavioral health needs
  • Support families navigating housing, food insecurity, and other social drivers of health
  • Balance staffing shortages, administrative pressures, and national healthcare challenges

Through it all, our teams show resilience and compassion that inspire us and ensure patients continue to feel seen, heard, and cared for.

"Everyone at NHC is so passionate about patient care and shares the same mission and values," said Rebekah A., clinic pharmacist at NHC Tanasbourne Medical & Dental Clinic. "Knowing my co-workers care just as much as I do has kept me at NHC for the past four years, and will keep me here for many years to come."

Why Community Health Centers Matter

NHC is part of a nationwide network of Community Health Centers (CHCs) that serve as a lifeline for millions of patients. We’re not just about treating illness. We’re about building stronger, healthier communities. By keeping care local, affordable, and patient-centered, CHCs ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need, no matter their income or background.

Always Striving to Improve

Each year, the Top Workplace survey helps us identify new opportunities to grow. Whether it’s finding better ways to recognize staff, removing barriers that make work harder, or investing in new supports, continuous improvement is at the core of who we are. When our staff feel supported and connected, our patients benefit too.

"I started at NHC 8 years ago, looking for a company where I could expand my skills," said Yari S., ED Utilization Engagement Ambassador. "I’ve stayed because of the support from my supervisors and the great coworkers I’ve met along the way. The encouragement and opportunities to learn have made it a place I’ve really enjoyed being a part of."

Our Staff Makes This Possible

Without a doubt, our people are the reason NHC has been named a Top Workplace year after year. The compassion, teamwork, and commitment you bring to this work every day inspire us all.

To every member of our staff: thank you. This award belongs to you. Here’s to celebrating six years of being a Top Workplace and to continuing the important work of serving our communities, together.
