At NHC, we know your mouth is part of your whole health. That’s why we’re bringing dental hygienists into medical visits — to make care more connected, accessible, and convenient for our patients.

For this Q&A, we sat down with Dental Hygienist Rachel B. to answer common questions about this integrated approach and what it means for you.

Q: Why are there dental hygienists in medical clinics?

Your mouth is part of your whole health. Many people see their doctor more often than they see a dentist. Having a dental hygienist in medical visits helps catch problems early and makes care easier. At NHC, we are starting with children (ages 6 months–18 years), pregnant women, and people with diabetes. These groups have a higher risk of gum disease and tooth problems. This “integrated” approach means more complete care and faster help when you need it.

Q: How does this integration improve my overall health?

Your mouth and body are connected. Gum disease can make diabetes harder to control. Pregnancy can increase gum swelling and tooth sensitivity. Small cavities can quickly turn into big, painful problems. Your provider may introduce you to our hygienist during the same visit. You can get checked right away and ask questions. If needed, you may be referred to an NHC dental clinic or another in-network dentist. Finding problems early can prevent infections. It also lowers the chance of emergency visits and supports better health during pregnancy and diabetes care.

Q: What services can a dental hygienist provide during a medical visit?

Quite a lot in a short, comfortable check-in, including:

  • Oral health screening and oral cancer check

  • Fluoride varnish for cavity protection (for kids and adults who need it)

  • TMJ evaluation and a quick look for signs of gum disease or cavities

  • Caries risk assessment and easy at-home care tips

  • Nutrition guidance that supports teeth and overall health

If you need more dental care, our team will check your insurance. We’ll help schedule a visit to an NHC dental clinic or another in-network provider. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Q: Where is this service offered?

Right now, dental hygiene is offered during medical visits at NHC Tanasbourne and NHC Milwaukie medical clinics. We plan to expand. Ask your care team if a same-day dental screening is available at your next visit.

Integrated care means better health, fewer barriers, and healthier smiles. Talk with your provider at your next appointment to learn more.
